Abstract

225,594. Golby, F. W., (Saranac Automatic Machine Corporation). Aug. 2, 1923. Machines for making boxes or pails from paper blanks and applying wire handles thereto comprise means for supporting the blanks in a horizontallydisposed plane, mechanism for automatically folding the blanks and mechanism for automatically applying wire bail handles to the folded receptacles which also serve to retain the blanks in the folded condition. Blank-folding means. The blanks A, Figs. 2, 4 and 19, are supported in a hopper 51 formed to engage the end flaps 58 and are delivered one at a time by feed rollers 60, 61 carried by a slide 62 reciprocated along the machine bed by connections from a rock-shaft 73 actuated from the shaft 10, the lowermost blank being separated from the pile, and drawn down into position to be engaged by the rollers 60, 61, when the slide is at one end of its travel, by a suction nozzle 64 carried by a pivoted bell-crank lever 67, 69 also actuated from the rock-shaft 73; the blank is fed by the rollers 60, 61 over an inclined table 78 carried bv the slide and is delivered by the slide, at the other end of its travel, under guides 79 to the rollers 80, 81. Blank-folding mechanism. The blank is delivered by the rollers 80, 81 under a plate 84 carried by links 86, 87, Figs. 7 and 8, from castings 85, the edges of the flaps 58 of the blank contacting with adjustable stops 90 so that the flaps are disposed below ledges 89 on the plate and the central portion 52 of the blank is directly under an opening 88 in the plate and over the top of a tapered former 38. The former is carried by a hollow post 36<1>, reciprocated from an eccentic strap 14 on the shaft 10, and forces the blank upwards through the opening 88; the side and end sections 53, 54 of the blank are bent downwards by the edges of the opening 88 and the ledges 89 respectively and the corner flaps 55, 56 become folded together and are finally forced around against the end sections in overlapping relation by sheet metal folders 93, 94 carried by the plate 84 above the opening. Wire-handle forming and applying mechanism. The wire for forming the bail handle, which is applied to the receptacle while on the former 38 in its uppermost position, is fed by mechanism 112 through a tube 113, Figs. 12 and 13, and slots 128 at the bottoms of spring-pressed blocks 125, 126, 127 mounted in a housing 129, Fig. 8, at the ends of guides 114 - - 117 carrying slides 118, 119 reciprocated by links 120 connected to a rock shaft actuated from the shaft 10. The slides have stepped inclined ends 131 - - 134 and carry bars 135, 142 on their respective outer sides, the bar 135 having a cutter which, as the slides move towards the former, moves across the end of the tube 113 and cuts off the lengths of wire disposed in the slots 128 under the blocks 125, 126, 127; further movement of the slides causes the bars to bend the short end portions 141, 143 of the wire at right-angles to its length. The blocks 125, 127 are then raised by the ends 131, 133 of the slides and the arms 146 of the folders 137, 139 pivoted in the slides contact with the block 126 so that the folders are moved to bend the side portions 114 of the wire around and force the ends 141, 143 thereof through the overlapped corner flaps of the receptacle; the ends of the handle are deflected and clinched against the inside of the receptacle by anvils 99 pivoted within the former 38 and moved to engage the wire by a cam 101 slidably mounted between and engaging the anvils and carried by a lever 103 pivoted in the post 36<1>, the lever being actuated from a cam on the shaft 10. The final movement of the slides causes the ends 132, 134 to raise the block 126, the handle being held against a stationary block 149 by the arms 146; cam plates 150 carried by the slides move in advance of the folders to hold' the overlapped corner flaps of the receptacle tightly together before the wire is pushed therethrough. The slots in the blocks 125, 127 are curved to counteract the tendency of the side portions of the handle to become burred outwardly. Ejecting-mechanism. The receptacles are removed from the former by reciprocating fingers 159 loosely pivoted to links 162 connected to a rock-shaft actuated from the shaft 10, the fingers being also pivoted to slides 158 disposed in guides in the castings 85 so that at the beginning of their upward' movement the fingers are moved inwards to engage under the edges of the overlappd corner flaps of the receptacle which is then carried upwards from the former and nested m the preceding receptacle in a curved hopper-like structure 153 from which the receptacles subsequently fall; on the downward movement, the fingers, are disengaged from the receptacle, which is retained in the hopper by spring-pressed plates 166. Reference has been directed by the Comptrolier to Specifications 2252/92 and, 14482/11.
