Abstract

761,118. Lifting jacks; load-handling apparatus. JARNAKER, J. J. Dec. 29, 1954, No. 37575/54. Class 78 (3). A jack comprises a toothed rack 1, a piston and cylinder unit 3, 4 guided for sliding movement along the rack and spring-loaded pawls 5 in the piston and cylinder; the arrangement being such that pumping fluid to and from the cylinder causes the unit to raise a load 10. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the pawls are each provided with plurality of resilient teeth. In a further modification (not shown), upward movement of the piston is assisted by a spring. In another modification (Figs. 4, 5, not shown), one piston and cylinder unit, or an interconnected pair of such units, co-operate with a pair of spaced racks. Load handling machines.-The rack or racks may be formed on a steel column in a building.
