Abstract
761,016. Purifying liquids; imparting special properties to water. LOOSLI, H. Sept. 9, 1954 [Sept. 9, 1953 ; July 8, 1954], No. 26161/54. Class 46. For preventing the formation of, or eliminating, coherent scale from salts in an electrolyte, e.g. calcium carbonate in tap water, the electrolyte is subjected to a series of electromagnetic fields of short duration, the voltages and currents generating the field and the duration of the pulses being such that practically no electrolysis occurs. The apparatus of Fig. 1 includes a direct current source 1, a resistor 2, a change-over switch 3 with an armature 34 and fixed contacts 35 and 36, a capacitor 4, a self-induction coil 5, and, in parallel with this coil, electrodes 7 and 8 in a vessel 6 through which flows the electrolyte being treated; rocking of the armature to contact 35 and then 36 causes charging of the capacitor and then its discharge through the coil 5 to produce damped oscillations and generate a brief electric field between the electrodes 7 and 8, the frequency of the oscillation circuit 4, 5 being sufficiently high, e.g. 10,000 c/s or more, that no substantial deposition occurs at the electrodes. The apparatus of Fig. 2 differs from that of Fig. 1 in that a glow discharge tube 13 is employed instead of the change-over switch 3 ; when the capacitor 4 is so highly charged that the firing voltage of the discharge tube 13 is reached, the capacitor discharges through the coil 5. According to an example for treating tap water in the apparatus of Fig. 1 to precipitate calcium carbonate as fine crystals, or to disintegrate any calcium carbonate crust already present, the current source 1 is of voltage 2,000, the capacitor is of capacitance 4 microfarad and forms with the coil 5 an oscillation circuit of natural frequency 30,000 c/s, the damped oscillations die after 3 oscillations, i.e. after 100 microsec., the change-over switch is adjusted to impulse frequency 1.5 per second, and there are electrode currents of 120 amp.
