Abstract
760,850. Ventilating. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD), Ltd., J. June 8, 1955 [June 9, 1954], No. 16947/54. Class 137 [Also in Group XI] An air diffusing arrangement for vehicles comprises a main duct 1 of inverted channel section with lower flanges 2 fitted to a longitudinal opening in the ceiling 3 e.g. of a railway vehicle, the duct for communication with a supply of fresh, or conditioned air, projecting upwardly into a space 4 between the ceiling 3 and a roof, not shown, and a housing 5 which is disposed within the main duct and has a ridged top to provide air passages 6 on each side which are masked from below by the side wings 25 of an ornamental deflector 21 screwed into the bottom of the housing 5 and forming two lateral air discharge ducts 26. A series of longitudinally spaced holes 8, formed in the top 7 of the duct 1 for admitting air from the space 4, are regulated by a sliding panel 9 having correspondingly spaced holes 10 and mounted on the top 7. The panel 9 is adjusted by a screw-and-nut. device 11 accommodated in the housing 5 and comprising a screwthreaded rod 12 rotatably mounted in brackets 13 in the housing 5, a knurled knob 14 fast on the rod 12, and a nut 15 which is movable axially along the rod, but is non-rotatable. The nut 15 is connected to the panel 9 by wings 16 whose limbs pass through longitudinal slots in the sides of the housing 5 and through one of the holes 8 in the top 7 of the duct 1 for connection by nuts 18 to the sliding panel 9. Guidance for the panel 9 is provided by studs 19 which are fixed to the top of the duct and engage in longitudinal slots in the panel 9. A hand hole, with a removable cover 24, in a flat middle portion 22 of the deflector 21 affords access to the screw and nut device 11. A fluorescent lamp 28 is accommodated in a channel 27 on the underside of the deflector, lamp holder 29 and spring clips 30 being carried by end pieces 31 suspended from the housing 5 through openings in the deflector 21. A transparent plastic lamp shade 32 is mounted by means of side flanges 33 which engage in slots 34 in the side wings. 25 -of the deflector. The usual capacitor 36 and choke 37, or other auxiliary control gear for the fluorescent lamp 28, are mounted in the housing 5. The latter is supported from the duct 1 by transverse partitions 40 which divide the air passage 6 into a series of compartments 41 for each of which there is a central air hole 8. A unit may be approximately the length of one lamp with six compartments 41 or it may have a length sufficient to accommodate more than one lamp. The arrangement is, also applicable to incandescent lighting or to a combination of the two kinds of lighting.
