Abstract

760,775. Photographic materials. KODAK, Ltd. July 2, 1954 [July 16, 1953], No. 19407/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) The effective speed of a photographic gelatino-silver halide emulsion when printing an image therefrom on to a silver halide layeris increased by incorporating into the support or subbing layer zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, the refractive index of the support or subbing layer differing from that of the zinc oxide or titanium dioxide by at least 0.4, the gelatino-silver halide emulsion containing the equivalent of less than 5.4 g. of silver per square metre of surface and the pigmented layer having a total reflectance of about 40 to 90 per cent of all visible light. The emulsion is normally coated directly on the pigment layer, but a thin intervening layer may be applied provided its refractive index is less than 0.1 different from either of the other layers. In the examples, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide is dispersed in gelatin and coated on a film base, a silver halide emulsion is then coated on top of the pigment layer. In other examples a cellulose ester film base containing titanium dioxide is subbed and coated with (a) a gelatino-silver bromiodide emulsion, (b) a medium-speed emulsion overcoated with a fast emulsion and (c) emulsions sensitive to red, green and blue and containing respectively cyan, magenta and yellow colour couples, with a yellow filter layer between the green and blue sensitive layers. Specifications 282,980, 303,752 [both in Class 98(2)], and 541,589 are referred to.
