Abstract

760,646. Caissons. DE LONG CORPORATION. Aug. 31, 1954 [Sept. 2, 1953], No. 25229/54. Class 68 (2). Apparatus for raising or lowering a tubular caisson 14 relatively to a platform 11 (e.g. the deck of a drilling barge), or the platform relatively to the caisson, comprises two rings 15, 16 vertically spaced apart and encircling the caisson which passes through an aperture 13 in the platform. Nuts on the lower ends of rods 34 engage the under face of the platform, the rods passing through apertures in the platform and rings, and the heads 35 of the rods are normally engaged by the upper face of the ring 15, whilst nuts 38 may be moved into and out of contact with the upper face of the ring 16 according to requirements. Fluid-pressure-operated jacks 26 and other piston-and-cylinder mechanisms 41 are positioned between the rings which are alternately locked to and released from the caisson, one being locked and the other unlocked. Locking is effected by fluid-pressure-operated bolts projected radially from the rings into engagement with apertures 21 in the caisson. For example if ring 16 is locked, operation of the jacks 26 raises ring 15 which is then locked, ring 16 unlocked and raised by the mechanism 41, and the cycle repeated as often as necessary.
