Abstract

760,531. Thermally-actuated valves. REEKIE, R. B. July 19, 1954, No. 20938/54. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] A thermostatically-controlled steam trap or valve comprises a temperature-responsive bronze corrugated tube M filled with a non- volatile, non-corrosive liquid, e.g. turpentine, naphtha, mineral oil, and enclosed in a metal protective casing N having holes N<SP>1</SP> through which steam entering the outer casing E may pass. The tube M at its lower end is formed integral with or secured to a socket member L housing a loose ball valve K engageable with a removable seat J, and at its upper end is connected by a cap Ll to a screw - threaded adjustment spindle A. When the valve is cold and no steam is passing the ball K is unseated. On steam passing through the valve, the tube M expands to move the ball K towards its seat and when the heat is sufficient causes the valve to close, whence condensate collects beneath the ball, the condensate being expelled on the reopening of the valve. The ball K may be of stainless steel and the seat J of stainless steel or nickel alloy. When high-pressure steam is being used a baffle-plate having a ring of tapped holes supporting a like number of tubes may be fitted so that the steam passes through the tubes before coming into contact with the casing N and the tube M. A mica joint may be fitted between the valve body I and the outer casing E to protect the tube M against excessive heat when superheated steam is being used.
