Abstract

Halopolymers having the general formula (-C2FnX4-n-)m where m is any number greater than 2, n is 2 or 3 and X is a halogen other than fluorine are rendered amenable to adhesives by treating the polymer surface with an organic phosphite, an amino compound containing unsaturated groups capable of polymerization into an adhesive or containing reactive groups capable of subsequent reaction with an adhesive, or a mixture of polyamines with halopolymers. The halopolymer of the above formula may be polytrifluorochloro, bromo or iodo ethylene, poly-difluoro dichloro, dibromo or diisodo ethylene, poly-difluoro chloro bromo ethylene, poly-difluoro chloro iodo ethylene or poly-difluoro bromo iodo ethylene. The phosphite may be di-2-ethyl hexyl, diallyl, di-beta chloro allyl, divinyl, mono allyl, diethyl, diphenyl or phenyl methyl phosphite. The amino compound may be ethanolamine, butanolamine, butanol diamine, butanoltriamine, propanolamine, propanol diamine, hexamethylene diamine, diallyl melamine, chloroallyl melamine, diamino ethane, diaminopropane, diamino butane, diamino isopropane, diaminohexane, 2-vinyl or 3-vinyl pyridine, 2-vinyl or 3-vinyl morpholine, 2-vinyl or 3-vinyl piperidine, ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine or a polymer of 2-aminoethyl methacrylate. Polyamines which may be used in conjunction with halopolymers are hexamethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, and tetraethylene pentamine, and the halopolymer may be polychloroprene, a copolymer of beta chloroethyl acrylate or vinyl 2-chloroethyl ether with an alkyl acrylate, polybeta chloroethoxy ethyl acrylate, poly-beta chloroethyl acrylate, or polyvinyl or vinylidene fluoride, chloride, bromide or iodide.
