759,489. Generating combustion products under pressure. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Jan. 29, 1954 [Feb. 26, 1953], No. 5466/53. Class 51(1). The invention relates to combustion equipment for gas turbine engines of the kind in which a flame tube is disposed in an air casing, the flame tube being formed of a number of sheet metal sections which overlap to provide air inlets into the flame tube. According to the invention, a downstream section of a pair of adjacent sections is formed adjacent its upstream edge with a series of circumferentiallyspaced, circumferentially-extending slots and those parts of the wall section between the slots and the edge are deformed to form corrugations which contact and are secured to the upstream section. The overlapping portion of the upstream section extends axially downstream beyond the slots whereby air flows along the flame tube wall. The combustion chamber shown comprises inner and outer air casing walls 10, 11 and an annular flame tube, the inner and outer walls 12, 13 of which are formed of sections 12a, 12b ... 12f and 13a, 13b ... 13f. The upstream end of the wall section 13b is formed with slots 20 and the metal between the slots and the upstream edge 17 of the section is pressed inwardly to form V-shaped corrugations 21 which are secured by welding to the wall section 13a. The upstream end of the wall section 12b is similarly formed with slots 22 and V-shaped corrugations 23 are pressed outwardly. The downstream edge 16 or 18 of an upstream section of each pair of adjacent sections extends downstream beyond the slot 20 or 22. The invention is applicable also in the case of tubular flame tubes mounted either each in its own tubular air casing or a plurality thereof mounted in an annular air casing. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 687,964.
