Abstract
759,200. Coating by vapour deposition. BREW & CO., Inc., R. D. March 1, 1954, No. 5920/54. Class 82(2). [Also in Groups XXII and XL(b)] In joining two dielectric bodies, by coating a face of each body with a layer of ductile metal which may be 0À5-25 micron thick and cold pressure welding the layers, the coating is performed in an evaporation apparatus. The coating metal may be In, Sn, Ga, In-Sn-Ga alloy, In-1 to 3 per cent Ga alloy, In-1 to 5 per cent Sn alloy or Sn-4 per cent Ga alloy. In making delay lines each comprising a fused quartz block B joined to two quartz end plates C, an end surface of each of six blocks B and a surface of each of six plates C are chemically cleaned and the blocks are held in sleeves 35 and the plates are waxed to a glass plate 36 in a holder 31 in an evaporation bell 12. About 5À2 gram of 99À975 per cent pure In powder per cm<SP>2</SP> of surface to be coated is placed in a Mo boat 21 heated by current from leads 16, 17. Evaporation in vacuo at minimum temperature is continued until coatings 0À50-1À25 micron thick are deposited. The thickness of the coatings is determined by means of a transparent plate 46 which is also coated and allowed to become opaque to the source of light in the boat 21, when a known thickness has been coated thereon, the plate 46 being positioned at predetermined distances from the source of light and the surfaces of the blocks and plates, since the respective thicknesses are functions of the ratio of the distances of the surfaces from the light source. The coatings on each block and plate are cleaned and roughened by wiping with a cotton swab and thereafter cold pressure welded.
