June 17, 1954 [May 28, 1953], No. 14830/53, Class 80(2) [Also in Group XXV] A coupling means for joining shafts, &c., consists of half couplings of identical formation each of which incorporates a plurality of axially projecting spaced members which are adapted to be engaged in mating relationship with the axially projecting members of a complementary half coupling, by axially sliding the projecting members of each half coupling into the spaces between the axially projecting members of the complementary half coupling, and means for locking the projecting members in mating relationship when so engaged. In the embodiment of Figs. 2, 3 and 8, cables &c. 21 are attached to half coupling members A, B, which are coupled together by sliding projections 223 on blocks 22 past each other into mating relationship, the blocks 22 being held to the parts A and B by a "bayonet joint action" 225, 203 and held in place by arcuate keys 23. When the projections 223 are mated, locking rings 24, held within slots 224 in the fingers 223 and initially positioned so that springs 243 thereon engage certain notches 205 in the half couplings A and B, are turned to bring the segments 241 on the rings 24 into locking engagement with the slots 224 of the fingers 223, the springs 243 then engaging other notches 205 in members A and B. In a further embodiment, not shown, the rings 24 are provided with internal locating notches with which spring-urged plungers co-operate to maintain the coupling. In a still further modification, Fig. 14, the half coupling members A, B. are each formed with threes fingers 223 each formed with an intermediate arcuate slot 224 of width to take two split locking rings 24 side by side, the split portions of the rings being turned outwards for easy manipulation. In use, the fingers 223 are slid into mating relationship and the split rings are then sprung into place. In a still further modification, the fingers 223 are each formed at their ends with a claw portion so that engagement is effected by sliding the fingers axially and then turning the half couplings relatively to each other. They are locked in this position by locking sleeves 27 (not shown) on each half coupling slid axially into position. Specifications 520,375 and 540,188 [both Group XXV], are referred to.
