Abstract

Human hair is dyed by treatment with a heated composition containing an organic acid and one or more azo or anthraquinone dyes containing at least one sulphonic acid or carboxylic acid croup and also a radical <FORM:0758743/IV(c)/1> or <FORM:0758743/IV(c)/2> wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and are selected from hydrogen atoms or alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl or cycloaliphatic radicals. The compositions may also contain non-ionic surface-active agents such as condensation products of ethylene oxide with phenols or naphthols, and they may be applied as an aqueous solution or dispersion or in the form of a cream containing emulsifying agents such as fatty acid esters of high molecular weight, or mixtures of fatty alcohols of high molecular weight, the sulphates of such alcohols and fatty acid amides of high molecular weight. Specified organic acids are acetic, citric and tartaric acids. The liquid composition is preferably heated to 40-50 DEG C. before application. The creamy composition is preferably heated after application. Examples are given.
