Abstract

The cracking and colour-fastness of pigment-printed textiles and other fibrous materials such as paper sheets is improved by printing the material with a composition comprising a pigment, a resinous or cellulose derivative-carrying agent and a binder, the binder being a monomeric polymerizable compound or a polymeric compound or a mixture thereof which is convertible by high-energy electrons to a higher molecular weight product, and then irradiating the printed material with high-energy electrons. Specified binders are monomeric materials such as styrene, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, tetraethylene glycol diacrylate and dimethacrylate, acrylonitrile, diethylene glycol maleate and maleate-adipate and mixtures thereof and mixtures of unsaturated monomeric alkyds with other copolymerizable monomers such as styrene; and polymeric materials such as homopolymers of butadiene and chlorobutadiene, copolymers of butadiene with styrene or with acrylonitrile, natural rubber, polyacrylonitrile, nylon, polyalkyl acrylates, silicone-rubbers and resins, polyethylene and modified polyethylene such as chlorinated and chloro-sulphonated polyethylene. Specified pigments are phthalocyanine blue and green, cadmium red, benzidine yellow, earth oxides such as red iron oxide, prussian blue, carbon black and chrome green. The carrying agent comprises a water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsion containing, for example, an alkyd resin, if desired modified with oils, alcohols or monocarboxylic acids; or a cellulose derivative such as ethyl cellulose or cellulose acetate or acetobutyrate; or an oil modified phenol-formaldehyde resin or a urea-, butylated urea-, melamine- or aniline-formaldehyde resin. Fabrics of cotton, wool, silk, rayon and of nylon, polyacrylonitrile and polyester fibres may be printed.ALSO:The crocking- and colour-fastness of pigment-printed textiles and other fibrous materials such as paper sheets is improved by printing the material with a composition comprising a pigment, a resinous or cellulose derivative carrying agent and a binder, the binder being a monomeric polymerizable compound or a polymeric compound or a mixture thereof which is convertible by high-energy electrons to a higher molecular weight product, and then irradiating the printed material with high-energy electrons. Specified pigments are phthalocyanine blue and green, cadmium red, benzidene yellow, earth oxides such as red iron oxide, prussian blue, carbon black and chrome green. The carrying agent comprises a water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsion containing, for example, an alkyd resin, if desired modified with oil, alcohols or monocarboxylic acids; or a cellulose derivative such as ethyl cellulose or cellulose acetate or acetobutyrate; or an oil-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin or a urea-, butylated urea-melamine- or aniline-formaldehyde resin.
