Abstract

758,721. Motor power plant. GEISLINGER, L. July 21, 1953, No. 20227/53. Class 110(3) [Also in Groups XXVII and XXXI] A motor vehicle comprises an I.C. engine 1 (as shown, a diesel) driving a differential gear 2, the output of which is divided between a mechanical transmission direct to the driving wheels 7, and an air compressor 3, which feeds the engine 1 and a turbine 15 connected to the driving wheels 7. The arrangement is such that the turbine 15 supplies power to the wheels under all conditions of vehicle movement. Under all operating conditions the compressor 3 has sufficient capacity to deliver the full volume of air needed by the turbine 15 and the engine 1, and the turbine 15 has sufficient capacity to absorb the entire output of the compressor 3. The differential gear comprises a planet-carrier 4 rigid with the engine shaft 22. The planet wheels 5 mesh with both a sun wheel 8, rigid with a transmission shaft 6 to the driving wheels 7. and teeth on the internal neriphery of an outer wheel 9. External teeth on the wheel 9 mesh with a pinion 12 on the compressor shaft 23. Part of the compressor output is fed at 31 to the engine intake. The remaining part passes via a heat-exchanger 13 in the turbine exhaust and a combustion chamber 14 (into which fuel is sprayed), to the turbine 15. The engine exhaust is also fed (at 35), to the turbine 15. In operation, the ratio of the turning movements of the engine and compressor remain constant. The transmission ratio between the engine and compressor increases with decreasing vehicle speed. The Specification includes curves of power, turning moment, and speed. against vehicle speed, for the compressor, turbine, and engine.
