Abstract

Penicillin particles for distribution in animal feed are coated with or embedded in a fusible substance which protects the penicillin against the decomposing influence of moisture, oxygen and penicillinase but which is melted or dissolved by the digestive juices of the animal consuming the feed, the penicillin compound being mixed with the substance in a molten condition and the mixture being sprayed into a stream of air at a temperature lower than the melting point of the substance so as to produce solidified droplets. The protective substance is exemplified by tallow, lard, hydrogenated vegetable or fish oils of low iodine number, polyethylene glycols of m. pt. above 40 DEG C., partial esters of hexitol anhydrides, e.g. sorbitan monostearate and monopalmitate, and solid polyoxyethylene oxide derivatives thereof, low mol. wt. amine- or amide-aldehyde, e.g. urea-formaldehyde, polymerizates, esters of polyhydric alcohols with natural resins, and natural or synthetic waxes. The penicillin compound is preferably sparingly soluble in water, e.g. is the penicillin derivative of the diethylaminoethyl ester of p-aminobenzoic acid (procaine penicillin) or of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, or is the penicillin derivative of N,N1-dibenzylethylenediamine. Before the solidified droplets are incorporated in the feed, they may be mixed with a substance which adheres to the droplets and does not decompose penicillin, such substance being exemplified by dried lucerne meal or calcium carbonate, which may have been impregnated preliminarily with a solution of a bactericide, e.g. sodium-(ethyl mercuri)-thiosalicylate, sodium benzoate or ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate. An example is concerned with preparing a feed containing 20 i.u. of penicillin/g., and showing no loss of penicillin after 6 months, by spraying a suspension of 1 part of procaine penicillin in 3 parts of molten hydrogenated soya oil downwards into a horizontal stream of air at a temperature of 20 DEG C., collecting the droplets on a travelling belt, mixing 1 part of the droplets with one part of fodder, and then incorporating this mixture into 125 parts of the fodder.
