Abstract

758,591. Resilient supports. SILENTBLOC, Ltd. Jan. 5, 1955 [Jan. 27, 1954], No. 2555/54. Class 108 (3). A resilient support comprises an inner member B, an outer socket A<SP>6</SP> and an intermediate member C of flexible material connected frictionally with, or by bonding to, the member B, the socket A<SP>6</SP> and the member C having three areas C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>3</SP> only, of contact, spaced from one another, the member C being compressed within the socket A<SP>6</SP> by pressure applied through the areas C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>3</SP>, the lines of pressure from the centre of the area C<SP>1</SP> passing between the areas C<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>3</SP>. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, before assembly, the member C is secured within a U-shaped member A<SP>7</SP> formed with shoulders A<SP>8</SP>, which engage portions of the member C adjacent the areas C<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>3</SP>. The arms of the member A<SP>7</SP> are drawn together to compress the member C and the unit so formed is inserted within the sockets A<SP>6</SP>. The shoulders A<SP>8</SP> may be dispensed with (Figs. 9, 10, not shown), or may be formed in the socket A<SP>6</SP> itself (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown), the member A<SP>7</SP> being dispensed with. The shoulders A<SP>8</SP> may be provided by a strip which extends only within the gap between the two areas C<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>3</SP> and does not encircle the member C (Fig. 4, not shown). In a further modification (Figs. 11-13, not shown), the socket A<SP>6</SP> is of rectangular cross-section, two adjacent corners of which function in the manner of the shoulders A<SP>8</SP>. The side of the socket A<SP>6</SP> between the latter corners, is split before assembly so that the socket can be opened out to receive the member C, and subsequently closed to place it under compression. The split portions are then united by welding &c. In the last-mentioned construction, the member B may be of non- circular cross section (Fig. 13, not shown).
