758,368. Protecting pipe joints; composite pipes. S. A. S. LAVORAZIONE MATERIE PLASTICHE (L.M.P.) DI M. 1. COLOMBO & CO. Oct. 6, 1953 [Oct. 8, 1952], No. 27422/53. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). In a welded joint for metallic pipes 1, 1<SP>1</SP> covered with layers 2, 3 and 21, 3<SP>1</SP> of thermoplastic material, the coverings at the ends of the pipes and adjacent the welding line S are removed and replaced by a multi-layer sleeve of the same material as that of the coverings, the layers 2<SP>11</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> of the sleeve being successively welded to the layers of the coverings. As shown, portions of the layers 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and 3, 3<SP>1</SP> damaged during the welding of the pipes are removed to the points A, B and C, D. The sleeve which is fitted on one pipe section prior to welding of the pipes is disassembled and each layer of the sleeve is cut to length and along a generatrix and trimmed to fit between the points A ... D. A metal collar connected to a source of electric current is arranged around the sleeve for welding the sleeve and coverings together. In an alternative arrangement the sleeve is formed by winding plates of thermoplastic material around the pipes. Specification 758,367 [Group III] is referred to.
