Abstract
758,073. Rolling. PLATZER, F. Sept. 7, 1954 [Sept. 18, 1953], No. 25928/54. Addition to 717,203. Class 83 (4). In a rolling mill according to the parent Specification in which the material is rolled between pairs of rolls which are successively pulled along the material and backing rolls are guided along stationary converging tracks, the working and backing rolls are swingably or rotatably mounted on cages rotatable about the stationary tracks and the amount of swing or rotation is controlled so that the upper and lower rolls lie in a common plane perpendicular to the direction of rolling while the rolls are effecting the deformation. The working rolls 17, Fig. 2, and backing rolls 26 are pivotally mounted in roller cages 35 which rotate about fixed supports 20, 21 carrying the converging tracks 23, 24 for the backing rolls 26. Each working roll 17, Fig. 5, is carried by a pair of arms 37 keyed on a shaft 40 in the cages 35 and each backing roll is carried by a pair of links 44 pivoted at 48 on arms 42 also keyed to the shaft 40. Arms 50 keyed to the shaft 40 carry rollers 51 which engage cam tracks 55 so shaped that the shaft 40 is rotated while the rolls are effecting deformation to maintain the rolls in a common vertical plane perpendicular to the direction of rolling. Springs 53 (not shown) maintain the rolls in engagement with the converging tracks 23, 24. For adjusting the roll gap the lower support member 21 has a guide element 56 carrying the track 24 which is vertically adjustable by wedges 57 actuated by screw spindles 59 from each side. The cages 35 have ring gears 62 at the peripheries in mesh with each other and driven from pinions 63. The material is fed intermittently by rolls 66 which feed the material forward between the successive engagements by the rolls which are wider apart than the length of engagement of the rolls with the material. In another embodiment, housings 72, Fig. 9, for the journals of the working rolls 68 and backing rolls 70 are mounted in a common body 73a supported on trunnions 77 in roll cages 80. The bodies 73a are maintained vertical throughout the complete rotation of the cages 80 by planetary gears 81 engaging rings 85 which are driven at a required different speed to that of the cages 80. During the working stroke the backing rolls engage the converging tracks 94, 95 and are maintained in engagement therewith by springs, not shown, between the housings 72 and the common body 73a. The devices may be used for hot or cold rolling and the rolls may be adapted for rolling profiled or round rods.
