Abstract

Fluoroalkyl and cycloalkyl-iodides which may contain other halogens are obtained by the reaction between iodine and the anhydride of the carboxylic acid of the next higher carbon chain length, CO and CO2 being eliminated, in which each of the haloalkyl residues contains at least one F substituent and preferably a total of 2 or 3 F atoms attached to its a - and b -carbon atoms, especially on the a -carbon. The groups attached to the anhydride may be the same or different, and may have other halogen substituents and up to 20 carbon atoms. Excess of iodine and temperatures above 250 DEG C. are used. In examples, trifluoroiodomethane and heptafluoroiodopropane are obtained by heating the corresponding C4 and C8 anhydrides with iodine. Other products specified include C2F5I, C4F9I and C6F11I.
