Class 146(3) An apparatus for defining characters on impression-receiving material 19 comprises a platen 18, a first line 10 of styluses mounted with their marking ends in axial alignment with the platen for independent movement towards a portion of the platen surface, a second line 11 of styluses supported with their marking ends 14 lengthwise of the platen and for independent lengthwise movement towards a portion of the platen surface spaced from the first portion a distance required between successive lines of characters, means to determine the maximum height of characters to be defined, means to reciprocate the marking ends of the styluses to determine the maximum width of characters and actuating means e.g. solenoids 17 for each stylus to apply impulses to the stylus to effect lengthwise movement thereof to define characters on the impression-receiving material 19 As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the material 19 is fed with a, carbon web 20 over the platen 18 at a speed which determines the maximum height of characters formed by the lines 10, 11 of styluses; each stylus having an inner wire 12 slidable in an outer member 13. The marking ends 14 of the styluses co-operate with apertures 22 in a guide 21 reciprocated by an eccentric 26, Fig. 3, not shown,-the throw of which determines the maximum width of characters. The solenoids are energized through character determining discs 28, Fig. 5, not shown, to define characters in the manner described in Specification 707,736 when punched record cards bearing the data to be reproduced are sensed. The cards may be punched in normal horizon-. tal rows and in interstage positions between these rows, the holes in the normal and interstage positions being sensed while the card is registered in single sensing positions appropriate to these positions. In a modification, the guide 21, Fig. 7, is reciprocated by the eccentric 26 in a guide 29 slidable on a post 30. A pin 31 extends from the guide 29 to engage a slot 32 in a bell-crank lever 33 rocked by a cam 36 against a spring 37. the stroke of the guide 29 determining the height of characters formed on the impression-receiving material which is stationary during character definition.
