Abstract
903,861. Sensing record-cards. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1961 [March 3, 1960], No. 7069/61. Class 106 (1). In a card-sensing machine provision is made to sense cards the hole spacing of which differs from the card feed steps of the machine by moving the sensing pins forwards or backwards in the direction of movement of the card during the sensing of the card so that at each hole position the sensing pins are aligned with the holes. The sensing pins 26, 27 are mounted on a carriage 2 which can reciprocate in the direction of the card movement and its position is controlled by two cams 3 and 4 having forward and backward followers 13, 14. The cams rotate once during the passage of a card through the machine. The sensing pins which are normally held raised by levers 24, 39 are lowered to perform the sensing operation. When a hole is present they allow a contact blade 35 to engage a contact 36. The pins 26 are for sensing additional data rows between the normal rows and they are disabled by rotating lever 23. This is achieved by a knob 15 which rotates a cam 17 to rotate a lever 19 about its pivot 20. The plate 21 bears down on follower roller 22 to rotate the lever 23 while still permitting reciprocation of the carriage.
