Abstract
In a catalytic process for hydrocarbon conversion or treating using a catalyst which requires to be periodically regenerated by being heated in a stream of oxidizing gas, the direction of flow of the oxidizing gas is periodically reversed between complete regeneration periods. The method is applicable in the autofining process for the desulphurization of petroleum distillates, as described in Specifications 669,536, 669,553, and 697,083, using cobalt oxide-molybdenum oxide-fluorine on alumina catalyst as described in Specification 719,627. By reversing the direction of oxidizing gas for each regeneration, a more even distribution of fluorine is maintained, and there is a lower overall loss of fluorine.
