757,304. Exciting dynamos. MACFARLANE ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., MACFARLANE, W. I., and MACFARLANE, J. C. Sept. 29, 1952 [Sept. 24, 1951], No. 22301/51. Class 35. In a modification of the machine described in Specification 566,168 the saturated " abutment " part-poles are of material more retentive than the rest of the core in order to provide some residual excitation when there is no control axis excitation. The poles may be formed with a narrow body as shown and may also have a T-shaped root R for easy fixture to the main core. The pole may be made of a stack of laminae mutually insulated by the application of kaolin on one side, and the laminae are clamped by a shading ring comprising a pair of copper straps 20 spaced by blocks 21 and secured by screws 21A. The " abutment " poles may be made of unannealed armature iron which has about three times the annealed retentivity.
