A record card controlled machine is provided with the usual card feeding path, magazine and receiving pocket and a card turning device which turns the cards in the card feeding path and passes them to the feeding means after turning. After analysis the cards are fed by means of feed rollers 15 on shaft 14, Fig. 3, to the turning device so that the front edge of the card has passed between the rollers 16. The latter engage the card and feed it under pairs of rollers 17, 18. Higher speed of the rollers 16 relative to the rollers 15 is provided for so that there is a sufficient distance between the cards at the turning point to allow the turning movement to take place without interference from the following card. The turning device is driven by belt disc 19 connected to toothed sectors 21, 22. Figs. 4 and 6 mounted on stud 30. The drive of the turning rollers 17 is taken via toothed sector 22 which drives the toothed wheel 27 secured on the shaft 25. An idle gear 33 is inserted in the drive between gears 34 and 36 so that the sleeve 38 rotates in opposite direction to the shaft 31 and the sleeve 35 opposite to the shaft 25 so that the card is turned as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3. A lifting device is provided so that the feed rollers and turning rollers are not both in engagement with the card at the same time. A slide 41, Fig. 4, having inclined planes is mounted for reciprocating movement in the guides 42, 43. A lever 45 fast on shaft 44 is controlled by a cam 46 which is connected to the belt disc 19 synchronously with the card feed. When the card centre is exactly between the turning rollers 17, 18, the cam 46 moves the lever 45 which moves the slide 41 to the left, Fig. 4, while the lever 47 moves the slide 48 to the right, Fig. 5. The inclined planes of the two slides are now provided in such a way that in this movement to the left and to the right the turning rollers 17, 18 engage the card and the feed rollers 16 are lifted, as shown in Fig. 6. The sector 21 and rollers 17, 18 are so dimensioned that the card is rotated for 180 degrees, the cam 46 then permits the lever 45 to rock to the right, Fig. 4, under the spring 52, the lever 47 rocks to the left correspondingly and the two levers move the slides 41, 48, so that the rollers 16 are lowered on to the card and the turning rollers 17, 18 are raised. In other embodiments, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the card turning means comprises a rotatable clamping member to which and from which the card is fed.
