Class 80(2) The runner 11 of a hydraulic coupling A is connected through gearing 12 ... 15 to drive in one direction a shaft 16 such as a ship's propeller shaft and the runner 8 of another coupling B is connected through gearing 9, 17, 19, 15 to the shaft 16 to drive it in the opposite direction. The impellers 1, 4 of the couplings are rigidly fixed to a driving shaft 6 of e.g. a ship's turbine. To reverse the direction of rotation of the shaft 16 one coupling is filled while the other is emptied by moving a scoop tube 20 the ends of which are oppositely directed and located in the coupling cases 3. 5. To prevent backward rotation of the shaft 6 and to damp its motion when reversing a member 22 with teeth 23 is helically splined to the shaft 6 and has pawls 24 engageable with teeth 25 on a fixed member 26. Upon slight backward movement of the shaft 6 the member 22 is moved to the right due to the helical splines so that the teeth 23 engage the teeth 25. When the shaft is rotating in the new direction the teeth 23, 25 disengage automatically. The pawls 24 may be weighted so that they engage the teeth 25 only at low speeds. In a modification the member 26 comprises a worm wheel and forms part of an inching gear for the shaft 6.
