Abstract

A medicinal tablet comprises an inner base tablet consisting of a mixture of erythromycin and at least one sulphonamide drug, the latter in an amount insufficient to provide a therapeutic dose in conjunction with the erythromycin, an enteric coating surrounding the inner base tablet and a combination filler and medicament layer surrounding the enteric-coated inner tablet comprising at least one sulphonamide drug in an amount sufficient to complete the therapeutic dose. The enteric coating may be cellulose acetate phthalate containing from about 17 to about 22 per cent of acetyl groups in a solvent such as acetone, ether, ethyl acetate, methyl etbyl ketone, methanol, ethanol, ethylene dichloride and ethyl lactate. Plasticisers such as mono- and di-alkyl esters of phthalic acid and adipic acid, and glycol and glycerol esters such as triethylene glycol dipropionate, triacetin and tri-butyrin may be incorporated. Specified sulphonamides are sulphadiazine, sulphamerazine, sulphamethazine, sulphathiazole and sulphanilamide: a mixture of equal parts of sulphadiazine, sulphamerazine and sulphamethazine is preferred. A thin subcoating of talc and gum acacia may be applied directly to the inner base tablet prior to application of the enteric coating and the filler-medicament layer may be provided with a sugar coating.
