Abstract
756,861. Stockings &c. COLE, B. T. R. REYMES-. Oct. 12, 1954 [July 13, 1953], No. 19399/53. Class 141. A stocking or sock has the foot part knitted by rotation as a seamless tube 10, Fig. 1, and has the toe end shaped by cutting and seaming along the lines 13, 14 respectively, and has a tuck 15, Fig. 2, formed in the upper part of the fabric and secured by the toeward end of the seam 14. The tube 10 is knitted with a marker course 11 defining the position of the toe extremity and with additional courses 12 for subsequent trimming. The cutting and seaming of the toe end may conveniently be performed in the same operation by using a sewing machine fitted with a trimming attachment. The stocking or sock may be knitted in the direction from the toe towards the heel, and, in the case of a ladies' stocking, the initial portion, e.g. as far as line 17, preferably incorporates a locking thread to reduce the tendency for ladder runs to develop in the heelward direction.
