Abstract

The invention comprises stabilizing tetrachloroethylene with an acetylenic carbinol. The acetylenic carbinol, which is used in an amount from 0.01 to 1.0 per cent by weight of the tetrachloroethylene, may be mono- or di-hydric and may be straight-chain or branched chain. In examples the acetylenic carbinols used are 3 - methyl - 1 - pentyne - 3 - ol, 2 - methyl - 3 - butyne - 2 - ol, 3,5 - dimethyl - 1 - hexyne - 3 - ol, propargyl alcohol, 2,5-dimethyl-3-hexyne-2,5-diol, and 3,6 - dimethyl - 4 - octyne - 3,6 - diol. Other suitable acetylenic carbinols are listed. The tetrachloroethylene preferably is treated first with an organic amine base, such as aniline or morpholine, and then distilled. It is preferred also to wash with a solution of an inorganic base, such as an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal base, dry, and distil, before or after treating with the amine.
