Abstract
756,028. Electric control systems. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 12, 1953 [July 12, 1952], No. 17638/52. Class 40(1) [Also in Groups VIII and XXXV] The quality of the fabric knitted on a circular knitting-machine is maintained substantially constant or regulated by providing electrical apparatus which compares the speed of the yarn being consumed with the speed of the machine. Any variation from a datum is exhibited and is capable of use in operating regulating means to adjust, while the machine is running. the rate of consumption of the yarn. A comparator circuit comprises two component circuits with their outputs in opposition and in one component circuit there is provided a capacitor 29 which is alternately charged from a supply 30 through contactor 21, rotated by the yarn, and discharged into a capacitor 31 of higher value. Across this capacitor 31 there is provided a resistor 32 through which the capacitor 31 discharges. A current proportional to the speed of the yarn, therefore, flows through the resistor 32. A similar component circuit is also provided containing the machine-driven rotatable contactor 26 and comprises capacitors 34, 35 and resistor 36 whereby a current proportional to the machine speed flows through resistor 36. If the currents are of equal value and the resistors 32, 36 have equal value, the potential difference between the points X and Z will be zero and an indication is given on a meter 37. If at any time the relative speeds become out of synchronism a potential difference between the points X and Z will exist and will cause an indication to be given on the meter. Such an indication may be used to enable manual adjustment to be made to the machine to bring the two speeds back into the desired relationship. Alternatively automatic means may be provided for making this adjustment. A circuit breaker or machine stop motion switch 40 may be provided in the circuit and is operated in the event of yarn breakage.
