755,998. Extensometers. DENISON & SON, Ltd., S. May 2, 1955 [May 1, 1954], No. 12707/54. Class 106 (2). An extensometer comprises a pair of gripping jaws A, B, Fig. 1, embodying presented edges a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP> of approaching angular disposition, these edges providing a track for the traverse of a roller pinion unit in engagement with a rack f, Fig. 4, the traverse of the unit affording a magnified indication of the change in length of the specimen which is held between pairs of spring-loaded grips e. The roller pinion unit comprises a pinion h mounted on a spindle i bearing rollers j secured to the spindle and running on the edges b<SP>1</SP> and freely rotatable rollers k running on the edges a<SP>1</SP>. A large diameter pulley m mounted on, for rotation with, the spindle i has secured thereto one end of a flexible ribbon n which passes over an idler pulley o and is secured to a weight r. As the jaws A, B move relatively to one another in the direction of the axis of their support c, d in accordance with changing length of the specimen, so the rollers move along their associated edges a<SP>1</SP>, bl, thereby rotating the pinion h and pulley m so that movement of the ribbon n gives a magnified indication of such changes.
