This invention deals with mechanism for the covering of rotating members on a drill-' ing machine such for example as the rotating shafts on a radial drill.
In a chilling machine of the radial type, 1 a radial arm is not only movable vertically but is also rotatableabout a vertical column or post. A. tool head, which is mounted on thearm in any convenient manner, is connected to an arm shaft. mounted in the radial arm. A. slot is formed in the arm in order to take care of the connection of the head to the arm shaft during the movement of the tool head along the arm. The slotthus formeo in the arm exposes the rotating shaft. Not only is the shaft in the arm exposed but in many cases the vertical driving shaft,.which is connected tothe arm shaft, is left exposed. Although a casing may be provided for the vertical driving shaft it'is necessary to form a longitudinal slot in such casing to take care of-the connection of the arm shaft to the driving shaft during the verticle movement of the radial'arm.
My invention provides means whereby the arm shaft carried by the radial arm is en closed at all times irrespective of the'movement of the tool head along the arm; Moreover, provision is made in my invention for enclosing the vertical. driving shaft without of the arm shaft. In carrying'outmy inven tion two flexible strips may be each fixedly connected at one end either to the end of the slot in the arm or to the head as desired. If the end of one strip is connected to the arm at the end of the slot, the other end of the strip is adjustably connected to the tool head so as to maintain the strips taut during the movement of the head along the arm. One -means of adjustably connecting the strip may be a drum normally undertension. A force may be normally exerted on the drum tending to wind the strip upon it. The
interfering with the vertical movement of flexible strip at'the opposite side of the tool head maybe connected to the head and to the arm in' a. like manner.
If the vertical driving shaft is provided with a casing having a slot formed in it as above set forth, a flexible covering as above described may be provided for covering the slot to enclose the vertical driving shaft. Other objectsand advantages will be in part indicated in. the following description and in part rendered apparent therefrom in v connection with the annexed drawings.

Referring to the accompanying drawings a radial drill is illustrated comprising a sleeve member -1-whichis rotatably mounted on a post or column 2.. The sleeve member 2 carries a radial arm 3 which in turn carries a suitable tool head 4. The arm 3 is sup:
ported on the sleeve 1 by means of a girdle 5 andis adapted to havevertical movement, in the usual manner, on the sleeve. i
An arm shaft 7, which is rotatably mount edwithin the radial arm 3, is provided for operating the tool carried by the head 4.? Suitable mechanism 8 comprising a shaft and bevelled gearwheels project through a slot '9 in the arm 3 for connecting the operating parts of the head to the arm shaft 7.
The slot 9 in the radial arm takes care of. the
connecting mechanism 8 duringthe movementof the head along the arm. However,
it will be noted the slot leaves the. rotating shaft 7 exposed. 1
The arm shaft 7 carries a bevelledgear wheel 10 which mesheswith a bevelled gear wheel 11.011 a vertical driving shaft 12. The, bevelled gear wheel 11 has a splined connection with the vertical driving shaft 12 and is supported by an arm 13 which projects from the arm 3. The vertical driving shaft is connected bysuitable gearing 12 to the main driving shaft located within the post.

In a radial drill constructed in accordance during the vertical movement of the radial arm.. However unless specialprovision is taken for covering the slot 17, the vertical driving shaft 12 will be exposed at alltimes.
In order to maintain a covering on the slot 17, astrip 20, which may be composed of fabric, metal or other suitable material. as desired, is stretched and held taut between the arm 3 and theupper end of the slot 17 A similar strip of flexible material21 is conj nected betweenthe lowerside oi the arm 3 and the lower end of the slot 17. In like manner, two flexible strips 22 and 23are provided for covering the slot 9 which is formed in the radialarm 3.
Inasmuchas the four strips 20, 21, 22 "and 23 are similarin construction and operation a detailed description of only one strip and its connection to the radial drill will be given in detail. The strip 23 on the arm 3 ishxedly connected to thearm at the inner end oi the slot 9 by means ofset screws 25. From the fixed connection, the strip extends along the slot 9 to the head 1. At thehead 4 the strip 23 passes under a roller 27, as shown inFigs. land at to awinding drum28.
The roller 27 is. rotatably mounted on a shaft 29' which is fixed to the head 1 as shown in Fig. 4e oi the drawings. The

When the strips 22 and 23 are so mounted on the arm 3, acovering is provideditor the slot 9 irrespective of the movement of the head 1 along the arm. The spring members in the drums 28 and 35 maintain the strips 22 and 23 taut at all times; It will be noted that ii? so desired the strips 22 and 23 may be fixedly mounted on a head 1. and the drums 28 and 35 may beniounted on the arm .3 at the ends of the slot9.

shown fixedly Connected by set screws 37 to the arm 3.. The strip 20 ertendsirom the fixed connection along the slot to awdruin 38. The drum 38, which is preferably mounted on the bracket '18, is similar in construction and operation to the drum 28 heretofore dethe drum 35 is so set as to exert a force a scribed. A guide) roller 39 is provided adjacent to the drum 38. The strip 21 is fixedlyconnected to the lower side of the arm 3 by means of set screws 1-0. T he opposite end of the strip 21 passes around a guide roller tlto a wind drum-.l2/lhe winding drum 1-2 is similar in construction and operation to the winding drum 28 heretofore described. Although the strips 20 and 21 are shown fixedly connected to the arm and the drums 38 and 12are shown mounted at the ends ofthe slot 17, it is to be understoodthat if so desirjed the winding drums 38 and 12 may becarried by the arm 3.
Without further analysis, the foregoing willso fully reveal the gist otthis invention that others can, by applying current knowledge5 readily adapt it fol-various utilizations' by'retaining one or more of the features that. from the standpoint of the prior art,fai1-ly constitute essential characteristics of either the generic or specific aspects of this inventionand, therefore; such adaptationsshould be, and are intended tobe, com prehended within the meaning and range of equivalency of the following claims:-
connected to said flexible strip; means eX- erting a force on said drum tending to wind extending along the slot to the head; a drum mounted on said head and connected to said flexible strip, said drum being under tension tending to wind the strip upon it; a vertical driving shaft connected to said arm shaft; .a casing surrounding sald driving shaft and having a slot formed therein to permit the arm shaft to extend into the casing; a flexible strip connected to the casing at one end of the slot; and a drum mounted on said arm and connected to the flexible strip on said casing, said arm drum being under tension tending to wind the strip upon it.
3. In a radial drill, the combination co1n'- prising a supporting member having a slot formed therein; operating mechanism movable along said supporting member and extending through said slot into the supporting member; and means connected to the operating i'nechanism and extending along the slot in the supporting member to the end of. the slot for entirely covering said slot in all positions of the operating mechanism.
4. A radial drill structure combining a column formed with a slot extending in the direction of its length; a radial arm supported by the column and slidable lengthwise thereof, said arm being formed with a slot extending lengthwise thereof; a tool head slidably mounted on said arm and having a portion extending through said slot; a
' driving shaft extending lengthwise of the column; a shaft extending lengthwise ofthe arm, said arm shaft extendingthrough the slot in the columnand being operatively con- 1 neoted to the driving shaftmeans connected to the head, and extending along the slot in the arm, for entirely covering the last named slot in all positions of the head on the arm; and means connected to the arm and extending along the slot in the column for entirely covering the last named slot in all positions of the arm on the column.
5. In a radial drill structure, the. combination comprising a rotatable sleeve; a radial arm mounted to have sliding movement on said sleeve; a vertical shaft mounted on said sleeve; an arm shaft mounted in'said radial arm and connected to said vertical shaft; a casing enclosing said vertical shaft and having a slot formed therein, said slot serving to permit the free vertical movement of: the arm shaft; and flexible means secured to the arm and extending along the slot in the casingto the end of the slot for entirely covering the slot in the casing in all positions of'the arm onthe sleeve.

In a radial drill structure, the combination comprising a rotatable sleeve; aradial arm mounted to have sliding movement on said sleeve; a vertical shaft mounted on said sleeve; an arm shaft mounted in said radial arm and connected to said vertical shaft; a drill head movable along the radial arm; a longitudinal slot formed in the arm for per having a slot formed therein, said slot serving to permit the free vertical movement of the arm shaft; flexible means secured to the mitting the head to engage said arm shaft; a casing enclosing said vertical shaft and arm and to said casing for covering the slot 1n the casmg irrespective of the movement of the arm along the sleeve; and flexible means secured to the arm and to said head for covering the slot in said arm irrespective of the movement of the head along the arm.
