Abstract

755,876. Plate heat exchangers. CREAMERY PACKAGE MFG. CO. March 26,1954 [May 29, 1953], No. 8918/54. Class 64(3). A heat exchanger comprises a plurality of plates, preferably rectangular in shape, each having its centre portion corrugated with the corrugations extending curvilinearly across the surface in a direction transverse to the flow direction of a heat exchanging medium passing over the plate. Preferably the corrugations of one plate are in contact with those of an adjacent plate. In the apparatus shown for pasteurizing milk, alternate plates 27, Fig. 3, are provided each with a peripheral gasket 34 which embraces the usual ports e.g. A and D for admitting and discharging one of the fluids to and from the space between adjacent plates, and by-pass ports e.g. C and B for the other fluid, a gasket being provided also around these ports and defining, with the gasket 34, a leakage space 34c. The gaskets are of plastic material such as rubber and may be vulcanized to the plate surface. The intermediate plates 28, Fig. 2, are provided with flanges 38 at their longitudinal edges and these flanges embrace the gasket 34 of the adjacent plate 27 to prevent spreading. Protuberances 37 are provided adjacent the inlet and outlet ports A and D in the plates 27 and give added support to the plates adjacent the ports as well as distributing the incoming fluid evenly over the plate surface. The reverse side of these protuberances also provides additional support for the gasket 34, Fig. 14 (not shown). Further protruberances 36 are provided as shown along the edges of the corrugated zone in the plates 28 to serve as flow retarders for any fluid tending to flow along the uncorrugated marginal zones of the plate. The direction of curvature of the corrugations of one plate (e.g. 27) is opposite to that of an adjacent plate (e.g. 28) so that a plurality of longitudinally extending flow ways is provided, Fig. 9 (not shown). The individual corrugations need not be continuous as shown but may comprise short segments. The plates may be made of stainless steel.
