Abstract
755,720. Cartridge feed mechanism. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 10, 1954 [Sept. 11,1953]. No. 25234/53. Class 92 An automatic gun in an aircraft is supplied with ammunition by an endless non-disintegrating link belt which is kept tensioned by resilient tensioning means. A guide channel 2 in which the belt 3 is guided may be arranged along the inside of the skin 1 of the fuselage and is preferably connected to the skin by stringers (not shown in Fig. 1). The fixed channel 2 joins a flexible feed shoot 12 exposed to resilient pressure from a shoe 13 loaded by compression springs; the shoot 12 in turn is connected to a second flexible shoot 22 issuing into the feed opening of an automatic gun. The empty belt leaves the gun through a channel 33 and a channel 42 arranged in a loading hatch with a hinged access door 43 accessible through a removable panel 11 in the skin of the fuselage. For loading, a belt filled with ammunition is put through the open access door 43 and the first link is engaged into a cog wheel 15 which may be turned by a crank 16; the first empty link emerging from the channel 33 is connected to the last link carrying a round of ammunition to form an endless belt. A convex guide plate 44 may be arranged in the loading hatch adjacent the exit from the channel 33 to prevent unintentional disintegration of the empty link belt on withdrawal.
