Abstract
755,612. X-ray tubes. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 18, 1954 [May 18, 1953], No. 13930/53. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XX] In an X-ray tube having a cathode 3, and a rotating anode 6 coupled to a rotor 8 with a corresponding stator winding 9 outside the envelope, at least that part of the envelope surrounding the rotor and also the anodecathode discharge path is of metal, of which at least that part surrounding the rotor is non- magnetic. This non-magnetic section 15a should have sufficient resistivity to avoid imparing the efficiency of the motor; thus copper and brass are stated to be unsuitable, and stainless steel is suggested. The metallic section 15b is of such material as will seal to the glass section 14. Inwardly projecting baffles 17 protect the glass section from the discharge. Sections 15a and 15b may be in one piece if the metal is suitable for both purposes; alternatively the entire envelope may be of the non-magnetic metal. The metal envelope may have cooling fins 20 of copper or aluminium; by forming these obliquely instead of radially, and sandwiching slats of lead between them, the structure can also act as a protective shield. A casing 19 guides the flow of cooling air from a fan 18. In Fig. 3, the glass section of the tube projects into the oil- or gas-filled casing 21 of a high voltage generator. In this case the whole structure 21 must move bodily with the tube; a suitable mounting frame, Fig. 8 (not shown), allows a multiplicity of translational and rotational movements.
