Abstract

755,061. Desulphurization of petroleum coke. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. May 19, 1955 [June 30, 1954], No. 19187/54. Classes 50 and 55(1). In a process for desulphurizing or reducing the sulphur content of petroleum coke, the coke is first almost entirely freed from volatile components such as hydrocarbons and nitrogen compounds by heating at a temperature, e.g. between 900‹ and 1200‹C., such that not more than a minor proportion of the sulphur present in the coke is removed, the resulting coke is then heated at a temperature, e.g. between 1200‹ and 1600‹C., such that all or a major proportion of the sulphur is expelled from the coke separately from the volatile components removed in the first heating step. The two heating steps may be carried out in two separate heating chambers or in two zones of a single heating chamber, steam and/or inert gas being introduced at a point intermediate of the two zones to prevent the gases present in the two zones from mixing with each other. The heating of the chambers or zones of the chamber may be electrical, or by hot combustion gases, or by the supply of oxygen or oxygencontaining gases to the chamber or chambers. The coke is preferably treated in the presence of steam and in a finely divided state and the fluidized bed technique may be employed. Rotating ovens or tunnel kilns which are connected in series may be employed as the chambers. In an example a petroleum coke initially containing 5À42 per cent of sulphur had its sulphur content reduced to 0À90 per cent, the temperature in the second heating step being 1500‹C.
