Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a water-miscible polyoxyalkylene fluid which has lubricating properties, and a minor proportion of boric acid, a water-soluble aliphatic hydroxy carboxylic acid or a watersoluble sulphhydryl analogue thereof, or of a mixture of two or more such acids. Preferred water-miscible polyoxyalkylene fluids are the polymers or copolymers of one or more alkylene glycols or alkylene oxides and the ethers and esters of such polymers or copolymers. A list of suitable water-soluble aliphatic hydroxy carboxylic acids is given, the acids being subdivided into monohydroxy carboxylic acids, polyhydroxy carboxylic acids and hydroxy polycarboxylic acids. In the examples, lubricating compositions are described which consist of (a) an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer and boric, citric, tartaric, lactic or alphahydroxy valeric acid; (b) polyethylene glycol and thioglycollic acid; and (c) butylene glycol-ethylene glycol copolymer and glycollic acid. U.S.A. Specifications 2,425,755 and 2,425,845 are referred to.ALSO:A lubricating composition, particularly suitable for lubricating gears operating under extreme pressures, comprises a major proportion of a water-miscible polyoxyalkylene fluid which has lubricating properties, and a minor proportion of boric acid, a water-soluble aliphatic hydroxy carboxylic acid or a water-soluble sulphhydryl analogue thereof, or of a mixture of two or more such acids. Preferred watermiscible polyoxyalkylene fluids are the polymers or copolymers of one or more alkylene glycols or alkylene oxides and the ethers and esters of such polymers or copolymers. A list of suitable watersoluble aliphatic hydroxy carboxylic acids is given, the acids being subdivided into monohydroxy carboxylic acids, polyhydroxy carboxylic acids and hydroxy polycarboxylic acids. In the examples, lubricating compositions are described which consist of (a) an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer and boric, citric, tartaric, lactic or alpha-hydroxy valeric acid, (b) polyethylene glycol and thioglycollic acid and (c) butylene glycol-ethylene glycol copolymer and glycollic acid.
