Abstract

Water-soluble alkali metal or ammonium salts of a carboxyalkyl cellulose having a degree of substitution of 0.4-0.6, a fibre content of at most 4 per cent and such a constitution that a 1 per cent by weight aqueous solution thereof buffered by 2.5 per cent by weight anhydrous sodium carbonate and 2.5 per cent by weight sodium bicarbonate has a viscosity of 10-25 centiposes, are obtained by etherifying cellulose in suspension in an inert organic liquid, e.g. an inert alcohol, ketone or hydrocarbon. In an example, cellulose suspended in kerosene is etherified with monochloroacetic acid in the presence of caustic soda to yield the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose. Salts of carboxyethyl- and carboxypropyl-cellulose are also mentioned. The product is for use, together with one or more detergents, in a washing composition. Specifications 623,276 and 710,777 are referred to.ALSO:A cleansing, washing or soaking composition comprises one or more water-soluble alkali metal or ammonium salts of a carboxyalkyl cellulose and one or more other detergents. The salt of carboxyalkyl cellulose, e.g. carboxymethyl-, carboxyethyl- or carboxypropyl-cellulose, is prepared by etherifying cellulose in suspension in an inert organic liquid and has a degree of substitution of 0.4-0.6, a fibre content of at most 4 per cent and such a constitution that a 1 per cent by weight aqueous solution thereof buffered by 2.5 per cent by weight anhydrous sodium carbonate and 2.5 per cent by weight sodium bicarbonate has a viscosity of 10-25 centipoises. Specifications 623.276 [Group IV(a) and 710,777 are referred to.
