Abstract

A cellular product is made by impregnating a solid copolymer of a predominating amount of at least one mono-vinyl aromatic compound of the benzene series and from 0.01 to 0.25 per cent of a polyvinyl aromatic hydrocarbon with carbon dioxide, methyl fluoride, ethane, propane, ethylene or propylene, by contacting the solid copolymer with the gas under pressure at below the heat distortion temperature of the copolymer until at least 2 per cent is absorbed, releasing the pressure and heating the copolymer to above its heat distortion temperature. Specified monovinyl aromatic compounds are styrene, vinyl toluene, ar-dichlorostyrene, ar-ethylvinylbenzene, chlorostyrene, dichlorostyrene, or chlorovinyl toluene, isopropyl styrene, and vinylxylene while specified polyvinyl compounds are divinylbenzene, divinyltoluene, divinylxylene and ar-methyl-divinylbenzene. Terpolymers, e.g. styrene - ar - ethylvinyl benzene - divinyl benzene may be used. The solid copolymer may be in the form of discrete particles and may be under a pressure of at least 120 lbs. per sq. inch at a temperature of 20-60 DEG C. when absorbing the gaseous agent.
