Abstract
Superpolyamides which are crystalline, fibreforming and have a high resistance to heat are obtained by polymerizing m-aminomethylbenzoic acid. In examples: (1) an 8 per cent aqueous solution of the amino acid was heated in a flask to remove water and then heated slowly for one hour to 320 DEG C. in an atmosphere of nitrogen to give a polymer which on heating to 340-370 DEG C. darkened and showed incipient melting; (2) isopropanol was added to an aqueous solution of the amino acid to precipitate the acid. Two parts of the moist acid were mixed with 1.7 parts mixed xylenols and the mixture heated at reflux for one hour to give a powdery polymer which darkened and showed incipient melting at 340-370 DEG C.ALSO:Meta-aminomethylbenzoic acid is prepared from isophthalic acid by conversion to metacyanobenzoic acid and subsequent hydrogenation. The amino-acid may be polymerized (see Group IV (a)).
