Abstract

A method of electrolytically coating an electrically conductive surface serving as the cathode of an electrical circuit comprising said cathode, an anode, a direct current source, and an aqueous polymer composition comprising a) an amine-containing polymer in which at least a part of the amino radicals are present in the form of the ammonium salt of a carboxylic acid, the repeating units containing said amine radicals containing in a proportion of between 2 and 50%, relative to the total number of moles of groups repeating present in the polymer, and b) a heat reactive condensation product of formaldehyde with a phenol or a suitably substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, said condensation product having an average of at least two methylol radicals (-CH2OH) per molecule, provided that the weight ratio of component (a) to component (b) is between 1: 9 and 9: 1 respectively, and that the combination of between a and b comprises between 2 and 25% by weight of the aqueous polymer composition, a process comprising passing a direct current through said electrical circuit, thus depositing a coating on the electrically conductive surface.
