Abstract

Permanently fusible and soluble resins are prepared by condensation of 3,5-diisopropyl phenol and an aldehyde such as formaldehyde, benzaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, furfural or acetaldehyde. The products may contain less than one or from one to two molecular equivalents of aldehyde and may be produced with or without an acidic or alkaline catalyst such as sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric and oxalic acids and sodium, potassium, calcium and quaternary ammonium hydroxides. In examples the components are refluxed and the resulting products may be neutralized, e.g. with line or hydrochloric acid, and dehydrated in vacuum before separation of the resin. The products are soluble in or miscible with acetone, benzene, drying oils, waxes, gums, resins, varnishes and plasticizers and remain fusible even when heated with curing agents such as hexamethylene tetramine or paraformaldehyde. These condensation products, however, act as curing agents for resins such as phenol-formaldehyde novolaks, as cross linking agents for polyene or polydiene rubbers and they are useful as plasticizers for thermosetting phenolic resins.
