Abstract

753,425. Hydraulic brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Sept. 13, 1954 [April 13, 1954], No. 26415/54. Class 103 (1). The torque resistance of an hydraulicallyoperated brake, which, as shown, is a twin disc brake comprising discs 1 and 2 and actuator cylinders 5 and 6, is governed by the operation of a valve spool 52 which cuts off and connects to a reservoir 17, the fluid supply line 22 from the pump 16 to the cylinders 5 and 6. The valve spool 52 is operated by the pistons 60 and 69, the pressures above which are those existing in the chambers 15 of servo-valve devices 12, these pressures being made to correspond with the magnitude of the torque on the discs in the following manner. The collar and piston members 9 secured to the brake support arm 3 are guided on inclined splines 1 whereby angular movement of arm 3 caused by the torque exerted on pads 7 results in axial movement of the member 9 which through plunger 13 and valve spool 30 having a recess 40 connects a pressure supply line 24 either to the reservoir through line 35 or to the space 15 through line 39. The limiting value of the torque will depend upon the setting of an adjusting screw 73 compressing a spring 75 below the valve spool 52. A control arrangement for a single disc brake is also described.
