An artificial finger or toe nail consists of a thin plate a to be stuck on the natural nail d and having edges tapering in thickness at the sides and rear, the underneath of the front part of the nail plate a being provided with a transverse piece b so that the natural nail can be pushed between it and the artificial nail plate a. The transverse piece b is integral with the nail plate a which is arched. The front part of the nail can be shaped as desired, e.g. by filing or cutting the transverse piece b being set back from the tip of the nail plate a by such a distance that it is not affected.
