752,954. Moulding briquettes of electrode material &c. ELEKTROKEMISK AKTIESELSKAP. May 20, 1954, No. 14908/54. Classes 70 and 87(2) Briquettes of, e.g. electrode material are made by moulding plastic electrode paste in a rotary moulding machine. The paste may be of other material than that particularly suitable for electrodes and is made from solid particles, e.g. crushed and calcined carbonaceous material mixed with a water insoluble thermoplastic binder, e.g. pitch or tar and is kept warm and plastic in a hopper 5 with a jacket 6, through which warm oil is circulated, and with heat insulation 7. The mould cavities are in the surface of rollers 1 which are mounted side by side and are rotated in opposite directions so that corresponding cavities form complete moulding spaces where the rollers meet. The rollers are hollow, thin-walled and of good heat-conducting material, e.g. brass or aluminium and are cooled internally by liquid supplied through conduits and nozzles in the shafts 2 and are cooled externally by sprays 4. The liquid is usually water but for paste with a low softening point it may be a special cooling liquid, such as salt solution, circulated in a closed cycle. The material from the hopper comes in contact with the wet and cool mould surfaces and a solid skin is formed on it as the rollers slowly rotate from a to b; where the rollers meet, briquettes are formed with solid shells and liquid or semi-liquid interiors. There is an optimium speed for a particular composition of material, examples being given in the Specification. The moulded and partly solidified briquettes drop into water in a bath 8 as the lower surfaces of the rollers move apart, and their interiors are cooled and solidined. They fall on a wire band conveyer 9 which carries them away for suitable disposal. One example of paste compositions comprises 70 per cent calcined petrol coke and 30 per cent pitch with softening temperatures 80‹C. Another example comprises 40 per cent quartz, 30 per cent aluminium oxide and 30 per cent pitch with softening temperature 70‹C.
