Abstract

752,856. Measuring heat quantities. VDO. TACHOMETER WERKE A. SCHINDLING GES. June 17, 1954 [June 17, 1953], No. 17829/54. Class 97 (3). In a heat meter which measures the product of the quantity of heat carrier flowing through a heating installation and the temperature difference between its supply and discharge by means of a bladed wheel in a supply duct or a flow meter driving a counting mechanism through a liquid coupling, the bladed wheel drives an inner cylinder the rotation of which is transmitted by the coupling liquid to an outer cylinder driving the counting mechanism, and the level of liquid between the two cylinders depends on the temperature difference. As shown, hollow cylinders 2, 3 are mounted in a closed vessel 1. The inner cylinder 3 rotates in bearings 5, 6 and is fast with a magnet 8 driven by a magnet 15 outside vessel 1 which is driven by the bladed wheel. The outer cylinder 2 is free to rotate coaxially with cylinder 3 and is geared to counting mechanism 13. Vessel 1 communicates with a vessel 17 so that a liquid 16 may flow from one to the other. The vessels 17, 1 are respectively connected by pipes 18, 19 to closed air chambers in contact with the supply and discharge ducts of the installation. When there is no temperature difference, the liquid in the two vessels has a common level 0 at the lower end of cylinder 3. When heat is drawn off, liquid is forced into vessel 1 and enters the space between cylinders 2, 3 through apertures 20 in cylinder 2. The degree of coupling between the cylinders depends on the height of liquid h above the bottom of cylinder 3, and the speed of rotation of cylinder 2 is thus dependent on the speed of cylinder 3, which in turn depends on the rate of flow of heat carrier, and on the height h, which depends on the temperature difference between supply and discharge. To render the degree of coupling between the cylinders strictly proportional to the temperature difference, the cross-sectionof one of the vessels 1, 17 is varied axially, the spacing between the cylinders is varied axially, or the spacing between cylinder 2 and a braking sleeve 21 introduced into vessel 1 is varied axially.
