Abstract

Chlorine-containing synthetic resins, particularly vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers, e.g. with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or styrene, are stabilized with a mixture of a substantially water-insoluble polyvalent metal salt or salts of a hydrocarbon-substituted phenol, the hydrocarbon substituent of which contains from 4 to 24 carbon atoms, and a substantially waterinsoluble metal salt of a fatty acid containing from 6 to 18 carbon atoms. The polyvalent metal salt of the hydrocarbon substituted phenol may be the barium, strontium, calcium, cadmium, zinc, lead or tin salt of butyl, amyl, octyl, nonyl, dodecyl, octadecyl or oleyl phenol, dibutyl, diamyl, dinonyl or didodecyl phenol, o- or p-phenyl phenol, 2-methyl-4-toluyl phenol or p-benzyl phenol. The substantially water-insoluble metal salt may be zinc, cadmium, lead or barium 2-ethyl-hexoate, laurate, stearate, ricinoleate or caprylate. An organo-phosphite such as triphenyl, tricresyl, tridimethyl-phenyl, tributyl, trioctyl and tridodecyl phosphites may also be incorporated. The composition may also contain a plasticizer such as dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, or tricresyl phosphate, and a parting agent such as stearic acid.
