Abstract

Acrylic acid, its nitrile and esters are produced by bringing lactic acid, ammonium lactate or a lactic acid ester respectively into contact at an elevated temperature, with a dehydration catalyst containing at least one phosphate or sulphate of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or of zinc. The preferred temperatures are in the range 200 DEG to 600 DEG C. In the examples: (a) methyl acrylate is prepared from methyl lactate; (b) ethyl acrylate from ethyl lactate; (c) butyl acrylate from butyl lactate; (d) acrylic acid from lactic acid, and (e) acrylonitrile from ammonium lactate using catalysts of the type described above.ALSO:Dehydration catalysts for the production of acrylic acid, acrylic acid esters and acrylonitrile from lactic acid, lactic acid esters and ammonium lactate respectively, contain at least one phosphate or sulphate of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or of zinc. In the examples methyl lactate is dehydrated to methyl acrylate using as catalyst (a) CaHPO4 and (NH4)2 PO4 on graphite; (b) MgSO4 and Na2HPO4 on graphite; (c) NaH2PO4H2O and Na2HPO4 on graphite; (d) NaH2PO4H2O and H3PO4\t on graphite and (e) NaH2PO4H2O, Na2WO4 and H3PO4 on carbon pellets.
