Abstract

751,621. Sewing - machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. Feb. 2, 1954 [Feb. 3, 1953], No. 3004/54. Class 112. [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXII] A stand for a sewing-machine comprises a pedestal with a floorengaging base and a column 12 near one end of the base, a lubricant-collecting pan 14 secured to the column near its upper end, and vibration-isolating means carrying the machine 33 on the pan. A driving-motor.34, Fig. 1, and a work-supporting table 32 surrounding the machine are also carried on the pan 14 through vibration-absorbing means, and provision is made for the substitution of other machines and tables. The pan 14 is vertically and angularly adjustable on the column, so that its position may be suited to the operator in relation to a treadle or treadles provided on the base to control the driving clutch or any other member; means may be provided for adjusting the treadle or treadles along the base (see Group XXXI). In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the machine 33 is fixed to a plate 50 provided with frusto-conical rubber feet 52 resting in hollow bosses 53 formed in the pan 14, which has a number of such bosses placed so that the feet of any machine required to be placed on the stand will rest on some of them. The table 32 is supported on the pan 14 by adjustable legs 37 with vibration-absorbing means 41 (see Group XXXII), and has an apron 47 with a hinged portion 49 which can be lowered for removal of the machine or access to its lower part; a drawer 46 is provided under the table. A stand 35 carrying thread-spools is secured to the pan 14, the table being slotted to clear it. The motor 34 has feet 55 engaged between rubber blocks 58 on a plate 57 which is hinged on a pin 63 carried by the pan 14 and is adjusted angularly about the pin by screw means 64, whereby the tension in the driving-belt 70 may be adjusted; the belt passes through a slot in the pan, a flange being provided round the slot to prevent escape of oil therethrough. A knee-pad 36, for actuating the presser-foot or other member, is secured to an arm 73 on a spindle 74 carried in lugs on the pan and connected to the required member by a lever projecting up through another flanged slot in the pan. The lowest part of the pan 14 is apertured to drain the collected lubricant into a detachable container 79. Tables and pans of other forms may be exchanged for those shown, for example to allow the work-arm of the machine to be free, for the sewing of tubular work, and the posts 37 may be replaced by shorter ones as in Fig. 17. The table may be placed close on top of the pan, the legs 37 being dispensed with and the vibration-absorbing means 41 resting in sockets in the pan, the machine then standing almost entirely above the table; an auxiliary worksupport of box form, made of wood or plastic, may be fitted round the machine base. The base of the machine may carry suitably-placed pivot pins 131, Fig. 17, to rest in notches in posts 125 upstanding from the plate 50 so that the machine can be tilted for access to the mechanism under the bed; it rests against a support 132 when tilted, and on buffers 133 when in the normal position. A shield 138 is provided on the plate 50 to catch lubricant thrown off by the mechanism. The plate 50 has a depression 134 to allow tilting of the machine, an aperture being formed in this depression to allow oil to pass to the pan 14. Specifications 408,466, 416,461, [Group XXXII], 605,385 and 688,800 are referred to.
