Abstract

750,707. Mineral-mining apparatus. SUBMERGED COMBUSTION CO. OF AMERICA, Inc. Jan. 18 1954 [Jan. 21, 1953], No. 1409/54. Class 68(1) Subsurface minerals, e.g. sulphur, which can be modified and brought to the surface by a liquid, are excavated by heating the liquid by a submerged combustion burrier- 1 in a boiler 3 and passing, under pressure, the resultant heated liquid and the combustion gases through a surge drum. 6 and then down an annular passage formed in a casing 9 extending from the ground surface down to the mineral 10 to be mined. The gases escape from said passage into a central passage extending up through the casing 9 at a point above the lowermost opening of the central passage through ports 17 shrouded by a baffle 15, whilst the hot liquid leaves the annular passage through ports 11 to contact and modify the mineral and carry it up the central passage where the gases entering the passage through the ports 11 assist in the lifting of the modified mineral to the surface. Alternative constructions of casing are described. Additional gaseous fluid, and, if desired, part of the recovered modified rnineral, may be fed to the hot liquid and the combustion gases at a point between the boiler and the subsurface mineral.
