Abstract

1504193 Oil recovery SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 14 March 1975 10731/75 Heading E1F Oil having a viscosity of from 1-10,000 cps is recovered from an underground formation comprising a first zone having a permeable pore space containing gas and trapped oil, and a second zone underlying the first zone and having a permeable pore space containing oil and communicating with the pore space of the first zone, by introducing a gaseous fluid into the first zone through first wells to heat that part of the first zone without forming a displacement front, and recovering oil from the second zone via second wells which are horizontally spaced from the nearest first wells. The second wells communicate with low pressure regions of the pore space of a portion of the second zone that is situated below an area of the first zone enclosed by the first wells. Third wells penetrate the formation to communicate with the first zone to allow gaseous fluid to escape from the first zone and so promote the distribution of the heating fluid. The heating fluid may be steam or combustion products formed by reacting air with the oil in the first zone.
